Muscle and Back Pain Explained

The cost to the nation in the UK from back-pain related issues this year is set to exceed £1.6 billion. Despite this huge cost, the Government is content in the knowledge that they currently offer age-old physiotherapy in the NHS, while doctors prescribe yet more opiates (pain-killers) that simply mask the pain, yet don’t address the root of the problem.

Back, muscle and joint pain has become a serious problem for the human race. In order to help solve the problem; instead of merely looking for a cure we must also examine its causes.


Back PainJoint pain is most often a sign of chronic inflammation or hormonal imbalance. The healthy immune system triggers the inflammatory response to deal with sporadic threats like injury or infection. But in many women, the inflammatory response is constantly on a low “simmer.” This chronic, low-grade inflammation prevents cell regeneration and repair and gradually tears down tissues — including those in your joints.

Chronic inflammation can be caused by a diet that’s too high in refined carbohydrates and sugars and too low in essential fatty acids. A high-carb diet promotes prolonged high levels of insulin, which disrupts cellular metabolism and spreads inflammation. Undiagnosed food allergies or sensitivities also contribute to inflammation when those foods are eaten. Many women with chronic inflammation also suffer from digestion problems due to an inflamed digestive tract.

Inflammation is the body’s immediate response to any injury, which may be acute or chronic. It involves pain, heat, redness, swelling and most commonly – loss of function in the affected part – much like what happens when you sprain an ankle. The body’s defense system kicks in and the ankle becomes immobile – allowing healing to commence. Blood vessels near the site dilate (become larger), so that the blood flow is dramatically increased. This allows white blood cells to enter the tissue and begin to engulf bacteria and other foreign particles.

Similar cells from the tissues remove and consume the dead cells, enabling the process of healing to commence. Of course anyone experiencing severe pain over a fairly long duration should not ignore the condition and should make an appointment with a GP so as to be sure just exactly what may be the cause. However, people who are overweight tend to suffer more often with joint and muscle pain. It is important to eat a healthy diet and to have regular exercise – and by this even such a simple thing as a brisk walk for half an hour, five times a week can make all the difference.

It’s all in the mind

Back PainPain is not an event in the part of the body that is hurt, or in the nerves that conduct impulses from the part, but in an area of the brain where it is translated into a conscious feeling. Whether or not pain is felt does not only depend on the nature and extent of the stimulus, but also on the frame of mind. A bit like the man who goes to the dentist and has his teeth filled without the need for an anesthetic, while another will have to have a double dose because his pain threshold is so low.

All pain is in the mind; it has no other existence. Colours sounds, smells, textures, and other things of which we are aware are real measurable events around us, but pain has no counterpart in the outside world. The use of pain as a warning is obvious: it can prevent further damage by discouraging the activity that caused it in the first place, but joint pain or stiffness — back pain, knee pain, hip pain, finger pain — or indeed any form of joint pain you can imagine is not an inevitable sign of aging, nor is it usually a sign of a condition like arthritis, but pain is unpleasant to no good purpose.

Most pain arises from direct mechanical injury to the specific nerve endings, such as a blow, a wound, or a burn, but pain can also be due to chemical irritation. With many other conditions, pain persists during the cure – as the body goes through its own healing process, but not all tissues are sensitive to pain, such as bone, the interior of solid organs such as the liver and of course the brain, probably the reason why brain surgery although excruciating to watch, is painless to the percipient.
