It is a fact that in more or less every product that we buy today at the supermarket contains chemicals of one kind or another. Why do manufacturers use these ingredients in their products is the question that I cannot find a sensible answer to – other than greed to make profit at every and any opportunity – and to do so with no regard for the people who buy the products – or indeed what this may be doing to damage their lives.
Recently I read an article about small (microscopic) balls made from polyethylene that never mind the damage they may be doing to us, given that the best of modern-day sewage plants can’t cope with this sort of stuff, it ends up in the fish that we eat.
The modern world is full of environmental pollutants with some estimation that there might well be over 80,000 toxic chemicals used regularly world-wide. It is vital to minimize our exposure to as many of these hazardous substances as possible in order to maintain our health, but regrettably many of these we are spraying, rubbing and consuming every single day. Some research papers that we have read suggest that there may be over 500 chemicals stored in our body at any time, so in all, this is a huge problem that we have to address without delay.
These chemicals affect our neurology, our endocrine system (hormones), our immune system and our detoxification pathways are found in the household and personal hygiene products that we use every day – with the question being – what damage are they doing to us – and indeed do they shorten our lives – and do they lead to the kind of health concerns that we all fear most?
The Dangerous 5
Five of the most prominent types of chemicals that are a danger to our very existence include phthalates, parabens, sodium lauryl sulphates, artificial colours and our old friend Triclosan and such that you may just understand what harm they, we have written a few words in explanation.
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products, which promote the elasticity and softness of plastics. Common phthalates are found in nail polish, perfumes, lotions, hair sprays, and other various perfumed cosmetics.
Parabens are used as preservatives in many cosmetic products, including makeups, lotions, shaving products, and most skin care products and where studies have indicated they can increase the risk for cancer – particularly breast cancer. Parabens are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumours. This chemical also has a negative impact on reproductive functions in the body.
Sodium lauryl sulphate is a foaming agent detergent, which is located in most household shampoos, soaps, and toothpastes, in addition to other beauty products. A known irritant to the eye and skin, it may also form into a carcinogen when combined with other toxic chemicals.
Artificial colours are used to synthesize artificial colours may have FD&C or D&C on their labels, followed by a number. They are “derived from petroleum or coal tar sources.”
Triclosan a truly nasty chemical it is commonly found is antibacterial soaps, toothpastes, and deodorants. Its purpose is to limit the growth of bacteria in the products. It is better known as Agent Orange and was used for deforestation in the Vietnam War and classified as a pesticide it is suggested that it can contribute to heart disease and failure, but it also can negatively affect hormones.

Skinlikes 100% Natural Deodorant
We have been reluctant to submit our product to competitions as most of them are finically supported by the very chemical companies that we disagree with. However, www.thegreenparent.co.uk has a competition that we think is of value. Given that the sales of our 100% natural products continue to grow and grow – we have entered the competition. It will be a few months till we get the result, but we will keep you informed. Meantime have a look at their site – it is one of the few that we would recommend. Other than this, have a read at some of the interesting links that we provide under about the horrible chemicals that are forced on us – unless that is that you use the ‘clean and pure’ products that we have to offer.
Please always remember that anything that we write in our health articles is opinion given with the best of intentions. We are not doctors but we do live a happy and healthy life. If you have any sort of medical condition, then please speak with you GP first.
